Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market: Welcome Sue's Kitchen

The Uptown Westerville Farmer's Market welcomes Sue's Kitchen.

Ahhhhh, Sue Renner bakes!

Sue says:

I can't wait to see everyone at the market again. It has been a long and crazy winter and I am so ready for those 90 degree days (not!). Some lovely spring temperatures would be just perfect so everyone can come out to visit us.

I have been busy "trialing" new recipes and adding new items for everyone to sample at the market. For those of you who like spending time with family and friends sipping coffee and eating tasty coffeecakes, I have several delicious varieties to share, including lemon cherry and apple walnut. They come in family size or individual size for those of you on the go. Also new this year are granola bars for those of us trying to eat whole grains and less processed sugar.

Since our first market is right before Mother's Day we must do all we can to celebrate everything "Mom." I plan to bring lots of goodies to the market to satisfy Mom's sweet tooth. You will find a variety of cookie stacks: Peanut Blossoms with kisses on top for Mom, Buttercream Frosted Sugar Flower Cut-outs, Chocolate Chip, and My Mom's Oatmeal Raisin. For the pie lovers, there will be Springtime Strawberry Rhubarb, Apple of my Eye Apple, Peachy Peach, Tart Cherry and So Berry Nice pies. Like last year, I will bring 9-inch pies for the whole family and individual 4 inch pies perfect for Mom.

*Keep in mind I do make low-sugar baked goods to order and can bring them to the market for you as long as you call me in advance to order.

You will be able to complete your surprise for Mom by picking up handmade Mother's Day cards and notecard sets at Sue's Kitchen. Each card features a beautiful picture of spring blossoms taken from around Central Ohio; from forsythia to hyacinth, cherry blossoms to daffodils.

Oh, and a Farmers' Market tip: If you want pie, come early!

Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market: Meet Jane Varley of Varley Valley Products

Why I love to bake and make jam:

Some of my earliest memories include picking berries, making jams and making bread with my mother and my brother. (My father just enjoyed the fruits of our labors).

I distinctly remember “helping” my mom make brioche (a fancy French pastry) when I was about four. I can only imagine how much help I actually was (NOT). I remember seeing a picture of me at that age, covered head to toe in flour.

I also remember going out to pick black raspberries – I usually ended up with just a few in my bucket, while my brother and mom managed to get a bucket full. I guess you are not supposed to eat 10 for every 1 you put in the bucket!

We always made our own breads, jams, maple syrup, and other foods. As a matter of fact, I don’t remember ever purchasing store-bought bread until I went to college. As my mom would say, “Believe you me, homemade is better”.

Although my last name is English/Irish, my ancestry is Pennsylvania Dutch, with my family moving from Germany to western Maryland in the late 1800s. I come from a long line of von Hoechlers, von Munchaus, Mayers and Jungs.

I grew up on my grandmom’s and great-grandmom’s recipes. I thought that everyone had pie for every meal of the day! Yes, we had breakfast pies (shoo-fly, Montgomery, and funeral pie); main dish pies (meat pies and pot pies (actually made in a pot), and dessert pies. We also had good home-made bread and jam at every meal. Sweets and Sours (pickled items) were also served at lunch and dinner.

Most of my baked goods and jams use recipes from my grandmom and great-grandmom. So when I am kneading bread or rolling out pie crust, my mind is often remembering my childhood and I am filled with loving thoughts of my mom (who passed away in 2005). I can’t think of a better reason for baking.

Thanks, Jane!

Uptown Westerville Farmers Market: Our first Recipe! Kalamata Olive Spread from Varley Valley

Kalamata Olive Spread on Parmesan Peppercorn Wheat Bread

From: Jane Varley, Varley Valley Products, Breads, Baked goods, and Jams.

Jane says: "This makes an elegant and very easy finger sandwich for a tea or just a quick snack."

Ingredients

1/2 cup chopped, pitted Kalamata Olives (or your favorite, strongly flavored olive)
8 oz. (Large Package) Cream Cheese
Varley Valley Parmesan Peppercorn Wheat Bread

▪ Chop pitted kalamata olives (or your favorite, strongly flavored olive).

▪ For each 1/2 cup of chopped olives, add 8 ounces (a large package) of cream cheese and mix well.

▪ Thinly slice (1/3 to ½ inch) some Varley Valley Parmesan Peppercorn Wheat Bread (refrigerating the bread makes it a bit easier to slice).

▪ Spread a slice with some of the olive mixture and top with another slice.

▪ Cut the sandwich into quarters (you can cut off the crusts first if desired).

To serve: Take a fancy party toothpick and skewer a well-drained whole pitted olive. Push a skewered olive (upright), into each piece of the quartered sandwich.

▪ If desired, add a thin slice of cucumber or fancy cut carrot.

▪ Serve at room temperature.

Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market: What's New At Malabar Acres

Mike Dippold from Malabar Acres shares...

Well, let me give you a little update.

First of all I will be at market as my peach crop appears to have made it through the winter. We have to worry for about another month as we could get a killer frost when trees are in blossom. Winter kill has been bad the last two years so this year was a much needed break.

Things seem to be in slow motion this spring. Wet ground kept me out of orchard until later than normal and it has been hard to burn our trimmings. Last Friday and Saturday were finally nice and we got to burn up our major brush pile. One more to go next weekend.

Check out our website www.malabaracres.com in near future. I plan to get it updated by May 1st with our offering for the year which will be a challenge but you got to set goals.

I will be in Worthington as I have in the past as well as Ashland and Wooster. Prices will have to be higher as gas, diesel, and chemicals have all gone up a lot.

The old apple orchard is shaping up quite a bit so maybe we will have some better apples this year. The bees appears to be bouncing back quite well but no mass winter kills like last year.

Well this is my contribution. It will be time to cut grass before we know.

I ask all of you to keep me in mind for any real estate needs. That is how I make my living. The orchard is my passion but the real estate pays the bills. Have a buyer looking for nice 50-60 acres northwest to northeast of Columbus say one hour out. Prefers no house on property unless it is on the edge of acreage. Will lease back land to farmer any tillable land. He is in 70s and just wants a quite place to retire too.

Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market: What's New this Spring at Bildsten Landscape!

We just wanted to send you an update on our spring growing season.

We have been busy in the greenhouses growing our plants for the spring Farmer's market.
Thank goodness for the recent sunny days.

The hanging baskets are starting to show color and it won't be long until the canopy in the greenhouses are full of blooms.

The basil and parsley are growing very well and we should have some really nice herbs to sell at the first market day in May.

We look forward to seeing everyone in a few weeks.
