Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market: Sue's Kitchen July 1st Market Report

To celebrate Independence Day, Sue Renner of Sue's Kitchen is featuring a little RED (cherry pie), WHITE (apple pie), and BLUE (blueberry pie) at the July 1st Market.

Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market: July 1st Market Report

The July 1st Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market is a great place to stock up for the July 4th Weekend:

We are grillin' and cookout friendly with certified organic, chemical-free, and conventional produce, chutneys, maple products, including maple barbecue sauce, baked goods that include pies, cookies, biscotti, confections, and breads, cheese, beef, lamb, jams, jellies, rubs and seasonings.

We heard from Blue Jacket Dairy, and Angel King tells us:
The long wait is over! We are bringing Fresh Mozzarella with us to market today. Make sure to pick up some tomatoes and fresh basil while you are at the market.

Speckled Hen Farm will open for business at the Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market on July 8th, so we won't see Brooke at the market this week. Speckled Hen features fresh eggs, chicken, and chicken products (like sausage).

The 2009 Market Photo Tours for June 17th and June 24th are now available on flickr.com. So, click here to take the tour!

We've added a new set of photos to our flickr.com collection for this year's market -- Batter and Bowl's cut-out cookie! Each week Batter and Bowl's Sara Yates brings a special cut-out cookie to the market for just $1 each. From Dragonflys to Tropical Fish, it's fun to see what Sara will bring this week!

We are pleased to announce that market vendors accepted $285 in WARM Fresh Green vouchers in May and June combined. WUMA and The Uptown Westerville Farmers’ Market support WARM. -- the Westerville Area Resource Ministry. WARM and the Farmers’ Market have teamed up so farm fresh, healthy foods can be available to everyone in the Westerville area: The WARM Fresh Green Program.

WARM Volunteers will be collecting non-perishables during this Saturday's Rotary Club of Westerville's July 4th Parade.

Click here to learn more about W.A.R.M.

(By the way, the parade start time is 1 p.m.)

Weather
predictions for the afternoon during market hours are a 50% chance of rain -- which is also a 50% chance of no rain! The Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market is open rain or shine. Pack your rain gear and keep in mind, each merchant is under canopy.

Frijolito Farm
has ended its 2009 market season.

Have a safe, happy July 4th Weekend, thank you for your patronage.

Note: Use your best judgment in all weather situations. In the event of lightning, the market will suspend operations to focus on personal safety. Photo image: Sweet! Krista Wagner sends this week's market report:

A favorite is returning this week, Lucky Dog Soap!

Made from flea and tick-repellent essential oils (cedar, citronella, and eucalyptus essential oils), your pooch will love their baths this summer! This bar is also ideal for the avid camper, hiker, and gardener to keep pests at bay while enjoying the outdoors.

And stop by this week and say hello to my family! They will be running my table for me this week!

Thanks, Krista.

Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market: June 24th Market Report

Here is the June 24th Market Report:

This week's farmers' market is dedicated to the memory of Carol Reinhart. Carol passed away this past Friday. Carol and her husband Woody have been great friends of the Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market and are almost always our first customers each week. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Reinhart Family. The Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market is making a contribution to the WARM Fresh Green Program to honor Carol.

We expect a beautiful day at the
Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market, and it will be very warm and humid -- so remember to prepare first, for the hot, summery weather and second, to shop!! We had a heck of a turnout last week -- thank you, Westerville! And, our vendors either sold out or almost sold out of produce and artisan foods.

While you are shopping, take a break and stop by The Front Porch (courtesy of Church of the Messiah, UM) and sit in the shade, put your feet up, and enjoy a cool lemonade or water at no charge! Last week, The Front Porch served up 400 cups of lemonade and water!!

Doran's Family Farm will be at the market! Michelle tells us they'll feature berries, peas, squash, and onions.

Bildsten Landscape has now ended their 2009 market season. We appreciate Bildsten's beautiful flowers (Bildsten provides the Uptown flowers we all enjoy) that brightened our market each week and hope that you are enjoying your purchase from Bildsten. Thanks to Mark and Karen.

We will not see Bridgman Farm this week.

Next week, Mary will return with her fabulous produce (Bridgman Farm produce is chemical-free), we will be welcoming a new market vendor Speckled Hen Farm featuring fresh eggs and poultry.

Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market: Nature's Honey June 24th Market Report

Krista Wagner of Nature's Honey reports:

Nature's Honey will have two returning soap favorites this week, Coffee Clean and Honey Almond Oatmeal Bar. Coffee Clean, one of my "working soap bars," is a hand soap made with organic brewed coffee and grounds. Coffee is a natural deodorizer and this bar works great to get smells like onion, garlic, and gasoline off your hands. This bar is also great for your favorite gardener to get all that dirt scrubbed off after a long day!

My Honey Almond Oatmeal Bar smells almost good enough to eat! Made with a unique essential oil blend that imitates honey almond as well as the moisturizing qualities of raw honey and the exfoliation of oatmeal, this bar is a huge hit and wonderful for your skin!

I will also be offering FREE SAMPLES this week of my GoatMeal Bar (that is goat milk and oatmeal, folks!) Feel free to stop by and grab a free sample to try. See you at the market!

Thanks, Krista.

Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market: June 17th Market Report

This week at the Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market...

The June 10th (week 6) UWFM Photo Tour is now up on flickr.com.

We are starting to see more vegetables as we move mid-June and just a few days from Summer -- summer squash, cabbage, more varieties of lettuces and herbs, and broccoli. Certified organic, chemical free, or conventional methods, our market vendors only sell what they raise and grow.

Last week's cut-out cookie from Sara Yates at Batter and Bowl was a sailboat! It'll be fun to see what Sara will feature this week! Sara's cut-outs are just $1 and grown-ups and kids love them!

Another market favorite for everyone is a stop at Pleiades Maple Products, along with Ohio maple syrup, Eddie Lou Meimer features home-made, old-fashioned, maple leaf shaped, maple sugar candy and maple lollipops -- all under $1!

The forecasts call for rain today, but if the meteorologists are right (that means we aren't responsible if it rains!!) there is a 4 hour window this afternoon between 3 and 7 that has clouds but no precipitation. Fingers crossed!! The market is rain or shine -- so pack your rain gear just in case and remember, all market vendors have canopies - so shopping and chatting and browsing and tasting -- still happening between the drops!

The only absent market vendor we know about today is Frijolito Farm.

Remember, while you're at the market... take a walk Uptown -- and Shop Uptown Westerville.

Meza, 48 N. State, always has Market Wednesday features including pantry and wine pairing suggestions and a $1 wine tasting!

The market is a great place to run into friends (and family) and just enjoy the day.

Market insider tip: Big Thanks to Church of the Messiah -- the parking lot is now repaired and the surface is paved!!

Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market: Arjay Gourmet's June 17th Market Report

Rohini Mulchandani of Arjay Gourmet shares her June 17th market report:

In addition to the usual complement of Rohini's Chutneys, made from different tropical fruits and vegetables, you'll find an array of flavorful baked goods and snacks such as...

Cookies - Cardamom (lite and delicious), Whole Wheat (reminiscent of molasses, cinnamon and nutmeg),

Macaroons - Almond (made with the whole nut),

Cashew Nut Chocolate - creamy and chocolaty, not sugary sweet

Indian Crackers - Farsi Puri - made with whole wheat flour and Indian spices

Crispy Rice Snack Mix - crunchy snack for munching, or use a salad or casserole topping.

My baked goods are free of trans fat (hydrogenated oils or fats), some are dairy, wheat, or cholesterol free, and have unique flavor profiles and, I hope, you consider them worth a try.

Samples available on most items.

See you at the market!

Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market: Nature's Honey June 17th Market Report

Krista Wagner of Nature's Honey shares her June 17th market report...

Nature's Honey will have two new bars this week at the Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market. One bar is a returning favorite, Double Mint Delight Bar. Made with peppermint and spearmint essential oils and exfoliating poppyseeds, this bar will really wake you up in the morning. This bar is also made with peppermint-infused olive oil, for extra peppermint-y smell! All the kids that stop by my booth really like this one. They tell me it smells like gum!

After lots of requests, we also have a facial bar, called Clear Skin. This bar contains lavender, tea tree, and rosemary essential oils as well as kaolin clay (great for soaking up oil) and calendula-infused olive oil (used for its skin healing properties).

Stop by, say hello, and smell what Nature's Honey has to offer!

Thanks!

Krista

Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market: Columbus Dispatch features Local Farmers' Markets

The Wednesday, June 3rd, Columbus Dispatch featured and article by Robin Davis detailing information on Farmers' Markets and market produce:

FOOD

Market time
Customers anticipate crops grown by area farmers
Wednesday, June 3, 2009 3:12 AM

By
Robin Davis

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The two hottest words in food today?

Local and seasonal.

Food bought from farm markets and pick-your-own farms engages consumers in both.
For many people, eating locally grown produce provides a prime reason for patronizing farm markets.

Last year, in a survey conducted by the Social Responsibility Initiative at Ohio State University, 64 percent of the respondents at the Clintonville Farmers' Market described the purchase of locally grown produce as important.

"I see a growing awareness that urban areas should be places of local, seasonal food," said Laura Zimmerman, market manager of the North Side offering.
The draw of locally grown produce in season means that more people seek to participate in the markets.

"We've seen an increase in the number of farmers who want to come and in the number of customers who come," Zimmerman said.

The market has 40 vendors this year, with a waiting list of 16 others.

In the first weeks of the market, which opened May 23, about 1,200 people attended each Saturday -- up from last year, she said.

In less-populated areas, too, farm markets are booming.

The Union County Farmers Market, for example, has expanded to 20 vendors, coordinator Kathy Custer said.

"Ten years ago, we would have been lucky to have eight," she said.

For customers at the Tuesday and Saturday markets in Marysville, the seasonal fare is especially appealing.

"You can have the crafts and baked goods," Custer said, "but people like the fruits and veggies."

Last year, in fact, the organizers had to stop the midweek market in May because of the unavailability of the top three foods sought -- sweet corn, tomatoes and green beans.

This year, the Tuesday market won't begin until July, just as those vegetables come into season. (The Saturday market started May 16 with some early spring vegetables as well as plants.)

"We try to educate people about seasonal eating," Zimmerman said.

Few customers, she said, attend the market in May expecting heirloom tomatoes.
Conversations with farmers excite customers about what is already offered -- and what to anticipate in the months ahead.

"They love meeting people who have grown their food," Zimmerman said of customers. "Everyone is so glad the season is here."
